Paignton had two teams in the final round of the Cornwall & Devon Summer Swimming League. Paignton B were in the ‘C’ Final and Paignton A were in the ‘A’ Final. Going into the finals Paignton A were in first place with 483 points ahead of Devonport A with 470 points. Also in the ‘A’ final were St. Austell, Newton Abbot and Carnbrea and Truro.
However, first up were the B team. There were many excellent swims from the team. Most swimmers were 12 and under so they had very little chance in the older age group races but all swimmers tried their very best and gained valuable experience of competition. There were some notable successes with victories by the freestyle relay team of Nicole, Bella, Iona and Brooke, Nathan in freestyle, Daniel in butterfly and the freestyle relay team of Sam, Nathan, Hayden and Daniel. The team were in good spirits throughout and should be proud of their efforts.
The A Final provided plenty of excitement and numerous swimmers setting PBs and gaining valuable points. In total Paignton swimmers achieved first places in 15 of the 51 races.Individual victories went to Luca, Megan, Levin, Morgan, Jess S-W, Amy Best and Alec. With Devonport A winning 17 races Paignton’s success was a whole team effort with every point gained being crucial. Paignton were victorious in the final race – the 8×2 Mixed Cannon which always provides a thrilling end to the gala. This confirmed Paignton as overall winners by 43 points from Devonport A with Newton Abbot in third place. Thus, for the first time Paignton lifted the trophy. Well done to all swimmers, Kevin, Jane and Nicky and all the volunteers that help with squads.
