Remarkably, the gala started on time at 2:35 and finished by 6pm. Thanks to Mark and Gareth for refereeing and to all officials and helpers. Particular thanks to Derek for organising and team managers for getting swimmers to the starting blocks on time.
Well done to all swimmers participating and to parents for supporting the event.
Bank holiday weekend was the start of the South West Summer Championships. Held at Plymouth, there were six swimmers from Paignton. On Saturday all six swimmers were in action in the 50m Fly. Emma made the final and finished seventh. Jess and Adam placed 13th. Jake and Alec recorded times either side of 30s and Jordan set a new PB.
Emma started Sunday’s sessions with the 100m Backstroke and made the final. Alec completed the morning session with the 400IM and was pleased to finish eighth. Swimmers and parents spent lunch outside enjoying the sunshine. The start of the afternoon session came just in time to prevent any serious sunburn though one or two swimmers were a little red! Adam can be pleased that he pipped Levin Veale in the 50m Free! Alec set a new PB in the 100m Fly.
Bank Holiday Monday was the hottest on record so perfect for a morning by the pool! Alec matched his PB to make the 200m Fly final and finished eighth. Jordan set another PB in the 50m Breaststroke finishing ahead of Jake and Alec. Jess was 14th in the 100m Breaststroke.
Overall some excellent efforts from the Paignton swimmers. Well done to Jess and Jake for competing despite the pressure of upcoming examinations.
Sam Alden, Luca Hailey, Finn and Flo Hadley made the trip to Hengrove for the Level 1 National Qualifier meet in March. Sam swam over half a second PB in the 50 butterfly, Finn swam three events achieving a big PB in the 50 freestyle, Flo swam a solid 50 breaststroke finishing in 5th place and Luca swam 2 events gaining a PB in his 50 backstroke.
Paignton then moved onto the TYR Invitational Graded Levels 1 and 3 meet at Millfield over the long Easter weekend. Jake Adderley, Sam Alden, Amy Best, Finn Hadley, Harry Joiner, Megan Kendall and Joe Northstone all took part in various Level 1 events, all having good, solid swims. Jake made the 50 breaststroke final and came home a respectable 6th place. Amy and Joe both achieved PBs in the 50 fly. This was Joe’s first long course meet and he also competed in the 200IM and 200 butterfly, both hard events, and swam very well.
Sam, Amy, Finn and Megan also took part in the Level 3 event, winning 6 medals between them. Megan took nearly a second off her PB to win gold in the 50 backstroke. She also placed 4th in the 200 freestyle. Sam took bronze in the 100 breaststroke with a 2 second PB, silver in the 50 breaststroke with over 1.5 second PB, bronze in the 100 butterfly and 4th in the 100 freestyle. Finn took silver in the 100 butterfly and Amy won her 100 freestlye “hot heat”, sponsored by TYR, with a 3 second PB that also secured a bronze medal.
A long 3 day event – well done all.
Paignton swimmers were at the Plymouth Leander Spring Meet last weekend to welcome in British Summer Time. In all there were 19 squad members participating and it proved to be a very successful two days of competition with lots of medals and PBs. The meet got off to a great start on Saturday with victories for Joe Northstone and Alec Farquharson in the 400IM, a challenge most swimmers avoid! Victories followed for Nathan Apps, Isabella and Morgan Ashford, Iona Farquharson, Finn and Flo Hadley, Harry Joiner and Caitlin Oakden. The girls 10, 11 and 12 year old age groups were particularly competitive so well done to Nicole Cook, Izabelle Dover, Tabitha and Harriette Lewcock among others for their excellent placings.
Sam Alden, Georgie Gill, Megan Kendall and Alexander Worth all set PBs. Good progress toward Regional Times was made with many consideration times and qualifying times recorded. Finn added a QT in 50 Free to his list of regional times. Harriette achieved the QT in 200 Back. Jordan improved his CT in 50 Breaststroke. Iona achieved a CT in 200 Fly. Nicole swam a QT in 50 Back and was, once again within a second of the 200 Back CT. Morgan Ashford improved his Breaststroke times and was within a second of the CTs for both 50m and 100m.
Overall Paignton were 4th in the team points competition just ahead of local rivals Newton Abbot. The boys finished third and the girls were sixth. Flo Hadley posted Paington’s highest female score with 94 points and Alec Farquharson won the award for highest points score at the meet with 187 points.
Particular thanks to poolside helpers: Nicky Joiner, Emily Hadley and Emma Ahsford. Officials helping out were Sue Apps, Celisha Lewcock, Kate Northstone, Jan and Gary Alden.
