The final of this year’s Cornwall and Devon Summer Swimming League on took place on July 8th at Plymouth Life Centre, with Paignton A lying in 3rd place behind Exeter and Devonport A. Thanks to some very strong swims in both the relays and the individual events, the team edged ahead of Devonport to claim a comfortable second place, ahead of 10 other teams from the two counties. This was a really excellent result, as a number of the older swimmers were missing. A great finish to the season.
Paignton Swimming Club successfully retained the Scott Ormsby trophy in a thrilling competition on July 7th. The gala took place at the outdoor pool in Kingsteignton, on a beautiful summer’s evening. The sun made it quite difficult to see at times, but despite this Paignton managed to hold off strong competition from Newton Abbot. This was thanks both to solid takeovers in the relays and some excellent individual swims. The team were without a number of key members and special mention must go to Elijah, who ensured the boys 10 and under were still able to swim their relay team. As always, many thanks to our officials, who did a great job of making sure everything ran smoothly.
Final points were:
Oddicombe – 43
Brixham – 93
Torquay Leander – 110
Newton Abbot – 208
Paignton – 215
It has been a busy month for Paignton masters swimmers, with appearances in the British Masters and Devon County Masters and Seniors Championships both being held in Plymouth. In the British Masters Senior age group Emma won gold in the 100m backstroke, along with silver in the 50m fly and two bronze medals in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle, plus a further PB in the 50 free. Not to be outdone, Jane also swam PBs in the 50 free and the 50 fly, picking up a bronze medal in the fly – a race in which the British record was broken by the winner in her age group. Nicky bravely entered the 400m and enjoyed being part of the occasion. Results for Paignton can be found here.
Last weekend Nicky also represented Paignton at the Devon County Masters and seniors championship. This is a very friendly gala and is open to swimmers aged 15+ It would be great to have some of our senior swimmers join us next year! Results can be found on the Devon swimming website along with results from the relay gala on the Saturday.
