Remarkably, the gala started on time at 2:35 and finished by 6pm. Thanks to Mark and Gareth for refereeing and to all officials and helpers. Particular thanks to Derek for organising and team managers for getting swimmers to the starting blocks on time.
Well done to all swimmers participating and to parents for supporting the event.
A record number of Paignton’s younger swimmers qualified for the South West Regional Age-Group Championships this year and competed at Hengrove and Millfield over two weekends. Amy H, Finn, Izzy B, Joe and Nicole all made their their debuts with strong swims across a range of events. Amy B, Ed and Isobel B, Harriette and Luca returned for a second or third time, to compete against the best in the South West. The highlight was Harriette’s silver medal in 50 backstroke and she also made the finals of the 100 back and the 100 free. Most of our swimmers took away a long course PB, plus some great experience, souvenirs and memories. It was impossible to get all the swimmers together for a photo, so apologies to those who are missing!
Bank holiday weekend was the start of the South West Summer Championships. Held at Plymouth, there were six swimmers from Paignton. On Saturday all six swimmers were in action in the 50m Fly. Emma made the final and finished seventh. Jess and Adam placed 13th. Jake and Alec recorded times either side of 30s and Jordan set a new PB.
Emma started Sunday’s sessions with the 100m Backstroke and made the final. Alec completed the morning session with the 400IM and was pleased to finish eighth. Swimmers and parents spent lunch outside enjoying the sunshine. The start of the afternoon session came just in time to prevent any serious sunburn though one or two swimmers were a little red! Adam can be pleased that he pipped Levin Veale in the 50m Free! Alec set a new PB in the 100m Fly.
Bank Holiday Monday was the hottest on record so perfect for a morning by the pool! Alec matched his PB to make the 200m Fly final and finished eighth. Jordan set another PB in the 50m Breaststroke finishing ahead of Jake and Alec. Jess was 14th in the 100m Breaststroke.
Overall some excellent efforts from the Paignton swimmers. Well done to Jess and Jake for competing despite the pressure of upcoming examinations.
Two teams were entered in this years Williams Shield gala, where Paignton’s 12 and under swimmers were pitted against those from Brixham, Oddicombe, Newton Abbot and Torquay Leander.
The event gave many of the swimmers in Paignton B-team their first taste of competitive swimming and they all rose to the occasion, with plenty of exciting races for the spectators to cheer.
Paignton A team came second overall to a very strong Newton Abbot team. As always, many thanks to all of our volunteers who gave up their time to help, including our Junior Captains who helped to keep the whole event running smoothly.
